Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon monoxide poisoning: the silent killer. The gas can’t be seen, tasted or smelt consequently without an adequate alarm system you wouldn’t know the gas was present in your home or business. Despite this it is estimated that only two thirds of homes have a carbon monoxide alarm system.
Each year around 40 deaths and 200 hospitalisations are caused as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. Many more people suffer ill health as a result of carbon monoxide but because these people aren’t hospitalised the cases are not reported.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: What to look out for
As illustrated above you should look out for:
- Loss of conciseness
The current legislation states that landlords and property managers must provide carbon monoxide alarms in any room of the building or home in which there is a solid fuel burning device. This however does not apply to gas boilers and gas cookers. Government statistics showed that in 2015/16 just over 25% of households had a carbon monoxide alarm fitted.
In rental properties however the situation is decidedly worse with only 20% of properties having fitted carbon monoxide alarms. there have been recent move in parliament to introduce regulation ensuring the provision of carbon monoxide alarms mandatory in rental properties however given the legislative impact of Brexit it is unlikely any laws will be passed soon. As an industry we must also do our part by supporting the installation of these alarms in the properties that we work in.
Battery powered, wireless alarms are cheap and very easy to install. Good positioning is easy to achieve by positioning the alarm near to the gas boiler, cooker or solid fuel burring unit.
